I was at Harbor Freight today and stood looking at the two presses for awhile trying to decide which one I should get. The 12 ton sure looks big enough to do the job for atv and dirt bike repair, but is it?  I've never used one, but I'm sick of using a vice.  Is a 20 ton ridiculous overkill?

I have a 25 ton with a 10 inch ram. If you just need
to pop a bearing know and then, a 12 will be fine, but
you'll be happier with the 20 ton, and fewer blown seals.

I am happy with my little 12 ton bench top press but I do wish I would have went with the 20 ton. The little one has not failed me but a few things I had to press had it pretty maxxed out.

Good to know.  I'll probably go with the 20 ton then.  Thanks!

20 you sissy!  It's like buying a trailer or garage....get the one you "need", and then wish you would have went bigger.

On a serious note, two guys got hurt at my work when a bearing race exploded in our press. One got a free helicopter ride if you know what I mean. Be sure to put a heavy blanket over pieces that are taking a lot of force to move.

Accidents do happen and sometimes catastrophic. At my
old work place, I heard a hell of a bang in the back of the
fab shop. One of the steel blocks supporting the part, slipped
out and cracked the concrete wall. If it went the other
direction, it would have caved in his chest. I like to use
C- Clamps on my blocking so they don't move around.
Our old press also had a plexy glass, pull down, safety gate,
which of course was never used.

You guys will be happy to hear that today I  picked up a shop press.  I went with the 20 ton harbor freight model for $199- a 20% off coupon.  Good deal I think.
