the mxr 450 is in a class of it's own compared to the other 450's except the ktm 450 (more on that in a minute). it the same engine as the 525 irs but with 61 less cc's the 450 is a 449cc i think and the 525 is a 510cc. the only difference is the cylinder and piston being a smaller bore on the 450. so since you have a 525 irs you will know how the power is. almost exactly what the 525 is. of course the 450mxr is lighter and can be made a 510cc with just a 525 piston and cylinder. the 450 mxr also has great shocks and mx tires stock.

i think they are a great choice for a race bike. in my eyes the only one that is better is the ktm but it is a lot more money worth it if you are real serious about racing but for the average rider a 450mxr is top notch.

I would like to add a little bit to this since i do actively race MX on a 450MXR. it is a great bike, however there are some flaws to it. Here are my only gripes.

The rear end, even with an upgraded/aftermarket rear shock, still sits about 1 1/2 inch higher than any other bike. This means that the rear end is much tougher to whip around because it doesnt squat as much during cornering. Easy fix tho, just relocate the rear shock mount...there is PLENTY of room.

Second complaint, the peg to seat height is much higher than other 450's...that makes it not very little guy friendly, but if your over 5'6 iit shouldnt be an issue.

To be honest....those are really my only complaints, other than the fact that polaris didnt really think a few things out very well as far as the assembly of the bike (im looking at you rear bearing carrier)

Other than that the bike is great, even in stock form i had wayyyy more power over some of my teammates who even had mildly built bikes. And now that my motor has a little bit of work done to it, it destroys them in the power category.

i really dont have much say because i mx my 525sra (which everyone i race with think its a 450) and i pull holeshot almost every time.  my only complaint is the plastic on the 08s. its stupid and breaks to easy. other then that i could not be more happy. i would not ride anything else other than a superbuilt ds 450 or a 450 sx.... so in conclusion.... yeah go buy a mxr..... right now.

I have owned a TRX450r, LTR450, KFX450 and now MXR450. Unbiased review as soon as I can get my g/f off the phone...

OK... I would honestly say the MXR isn't the best bike or 450 for everyone. I liked all the bikes, and for different reasons. The MXR is hands down the fastest and most powerful. Also reverse is a huge plus over the LTR (borderline 2nd favorite). Handling is good, better than the TRX, on par with KFX, not quite as good as LTR (comes stock low and wide). Lowering the center of gravity makes the Outlaw handle very well, now probably on par with the LTR. There are some weird ergos on the Outlaw like the '08 seat, peg position as mentioned before, except I'm 6'2 and think they are TOO high. Plastics are another good complaint, tho I've had NO issues so far. If you want a bike that you can put a pipe and filter on and tune and be done I'd suggest an LTR. If you want a bike that has unlimited aftermarket support and super cheap to build, I'd suggest the TRX. If you want a light, compact all-rounder that is EXPENSIVE to mod but feels like you're straddling a dirt bike, get the KFX. Now if you're a DIY'er and think you can do whatever it takes to make the bike the way you want, and also don't mind being the fastest reliable bike on your block, I'd pick the MXR.

At first I loved the MXR because of the power. Then I got annoyed by a handful of things, fixed/changed/modded/altered with help from this site and now I'm in love again!

Also keep in mind that you may not feel the need to mod everything some of us have. Everyone's preferences are different, and you should already know what you do or don't like about an Outlaw in general. MXR won't be any different there, just faster and lighter!

errrr! thought i made it in time =(.... my main complaints are the seat.... but once you mod it like i did youll be very happy. another thing is that the motor is very chattery and gives you a nervous feeling but its normal. there are just lots of small stupid stuff that happen that piss you off..... but ive conquered many of them. like lane yeah the rear shock was a problem. so i decided to move to an 03 pred shock and honestly couldnt be happier. again i havent tried the shock he is currently running but i have no complaints with my rear suspension. at this point with where my bike is at i have no complaints. but thats just the thing about these bikes..... a problem will occur later on down the road... the beast just hasnt made up its mind yet..... i do LOOOOOOOVE being the only polaris. if your main goal is to make a guy that has a SUPER, EXTREMELY, EXPENSIVE, MONEYPIT, PRIZED BEAUTY quad feel stupid. get the sra or just piss them off more and do it on an irs

Chris.....Are you more interested in the MXR for MX, XC,
or general trail riding ??

I was interested to see a comment on the LTR. Our Pa.
boy, Chris Borich has been taking a ton of wins and GNCC
Pro championships on a LTR, and the only one using this
machine. Everyone else is either on a Honda or Yamaha.
Of course, Chris is one of those guys that would'nt matter
what he threw a leg over.....His bike is set up real tight
and narrow.

Throw some 20" tires on the MXR like I did and its great in the woods, prob my favorite.

Fuj my biggest gripe of the LTR was in the woods but of course setting it up for XC would change that. It is a comfortable bike and made good power compared to the other two. Fit and finish was nice too but it was clutter in the frame for working on just like the KFX. MXR and TRX are very easy to work on.

If you guys have any more specific questions just ask!

I know I'm kindof new around here, but I'd like to state something. This is the best group of guys I've ever seen on an internet forum. I know this is off topic, but this thread, and the open opinions, and no bickering is unusual. I'm fairly new to the outlaws, but I've had a crap load of experience with a lot of the others. I can tell you everything you might want to know about an older yfz450, but I haven't ever been around the newer fuel injected, t shaped seat ones. If you would like some input on my opinion of the older ones, I can write you a novel. If you don't I won't waste my time.

Spill qzillanut!!!  I've always been interested in the older YFZ's.  Even thought about racing them at one point because of part availability.

The YFZ 450Rs with fuel injection are hard to beat. Even with just a power commander and GYTR pipe they are some wicked machines. The new seat shape allows you to grab on pretty tight with your legs onto the tank.

my buddy has the 11. it handles great. like all yfzs, cant make tight turns though. he has a commander and an hmf. its not a whole lot faster than my bike before the bbk. we were pretty dead even til i hit the rev lim, he was a length ahead of me everytime. he is also 30 lbs lighter

Post away guys.  This is the type of info I love to read...not that crap put in most magazines.  Real experiences from real people that spend their hard earned dollars on a machine that they aren't afraid to tell the truth about.

Idea here...should we compile a thread of unbiased quad reviews in another section?  Make a new section?

Sorry for the tease. Been busy trying to get ready for my Little Sahara trip next weekend, and totally forgot.

Both of my YFZ's are 04 models. They both came from the same guy. Him and his brother went to the dealership and bought them within 2 weeks of each other.

They are a very solid, well built bike. Both of mine have original plastics, and no cracks anywhere. Yamaha has done a good job of updating the needs of the bike throughout the years, so a lot of the short comings of my 04 models were addressed by Yamaha. Just have to study up on what all they have changed to make the bike more reliable, and keep it competitive with the others.

The 04-05's were actually only 439's from Yamaha. In 06 they bumped the stroke up enough to make it a 449. The piston did not change, just the stroke of the crank and the rod length. They also got a new head in 06. The 04-05 head is often sought out by drag racers, because it has more port volume. The 06 head is a little higher velocity, smaller port, that makes more low-mid power than the 04-05, with no real loss of top end on a stockish motor.

All YFZ's made prior to fuel injection can gain power with the "cam mod" All you do is pull the valve cover, and timing chain tensioner with the engine on top dead center and retard the exhaust cam one tooth. This gives the same cam timing that Yamaha used on the dirt bike engine, which has more top end power, and a little less on bottom, but the gain on top more than makes up for the loss on bottom, IMO.

06 saw a bunch of changes to the bike as well. Off the top of my head Yamaha went with a longer steering stem (1 inch I think), a thicker seat cushion (which is MUCH needed), a bigger radiator (also much needed), different rear swingarm. I have never had a single issue with my 04-05 rear swing arm setup, so I haven't really studied what all they changed. I know the carrier, and brakes are a little different. I don't think the geometry changed much if any though.........but I could be wrong. I know it's not real difficult to change an 04-05 over to the new style, but you have to have everything, carrier, brakes, etc..  The electrical system also got changed up. The 04-05's had issues with overcharging, and killing batteries. I've read that it is a good idea to always run the headlights, to help prevent this. Or you can change over to the new style stator and voltage regulator, which I did on my blue YFZ. I bought a kit from Trail Tech, that had instructions on how to wire it in, and had everything you need, along with a high output stator. Figured I might as well, since I put HID's on that bike. The wife's white 04 has never been messed with, and I've never had issues, so I don't know how big of a problem it is.

In 07 Yamaha upgraded the oiling system. It wasn't a big change, and you can modify an earlier setup to the new setup. They put a piston squirter in, and a bigger oil pump. So you can buy an 07 up side cover, squirter nozzle, and oil pump rotors and you are set. You can modify the earlier side covers to accept the oil squirter, but it takes some machine work. I bought one cover, and modified the other since I had a pattern laying there.

I don't think there were any more significant changes to the bikes until Yamaha went with fuel injection. When they did that, I think it was pretty much a whole new bike. Alot of the engine parts are interchangeable, but it is a whole new engine for the most part. I really don't have much experience with them, so I'm not gonna go there.

As far as riding the bike goes, they are a blast. They do pretty much exactly what you want them to do. Very predictable and controllable. My biggest gripe is the comfort level. The seat feels like a 2x4.......heck I'm not sure a 2x4 wouldn't be an upgrade on an 04-05 model. I put quadtech hump seats on both of mine, and it was a night and day difference, but they still aren't as comfy as the outlaw....at least for me at 6'2" and 260. The suspension is pretty good, but really stiff for a joy rider. I have my shocks set really soft on compression and rebound, but it still beats your guts out on choppy sand. The bike feels pretty cramped up to me also, but again I'm a pretty big guy, so that's normal. With the thicker seat, and the +1.5 steering stem (which is +2.5 on the 04-05's) my blue YFZ feels a LOT better than stock to me. The rider position similar to a 700 raptor now, but still has a much more sporty feel riding it. The outlaw feels bigger than either one to me, which I like a lot.

I have never really spent any time on a stock one, to comment on power. They can be made however mean you want though, with the excellent support of the aftermarket community.

I can't think of much else right now. If there is something you want to know specifically, I'll do my best to answer.

I thought of a couple other things I wanted to make mention of.

The tranny in a YFZ is amazing. It shifts awesome, and never messes up, or at least in my experience. The shafts and gears are huge compared to the stuff in my zilla tranny. I bought both YFZ's as a package deal. The white one was running, and the blue one was blowed all to pieces. The rod had basically sawed the jug and crank cases in half. I wasn't sure if I was going to have anything there worth using or not. When I split what was left of the cases, the tranny gears looked like new. I just rolled them off into a new set of cases, and didn't think twice about it. That was either 3 or 4 years ago, can't remember for sure. But that bike had enough hours to self destruct a completely bone stock engine. Didn't have so much as a filter or slip on, just 4-5 years of hard riding. I haven't had a seconds worth of trouble out of it. Mind you, this is a 60ish HP engine now since I rebuilt it, and I beat the crap out of it on the drag strip every time we go riding. So needless to say, I'm very impressed with how the tranny's hold up. The ratio's seem almost perfect as well. It shifts a lot smoother/easier than the tranny in my outlaw. That is probably my biggest gripe about my outlaw. Tranny shifts like crap compared to what I'm used to, and neutral is kindof hard to find.

I also wanted to comment more on the radiator thing. I took a small 04-05 radiator out of my blue YFZ and put in a huge PWR radiator. I can't believe how much more comfortable it made that bike. It always felt like the pipe was going to burn your leg off before. Now you don't really notice it as much. I have ruined several sets of jeans now. I don't think the pipe is any cooler at all, cause it's still usually glowing red hot at night, but all the excessive heat coming off the engine, that I always blamed on the pipe, is pretty much gone. I don't know how much bigger the 06+ radiator is, than an 04-05 radiator, but anything would help.

I think its funny you say the seat on the mxr is awesome, I HATE IT lol.

it cuts off too short on the sides and when riding mx my butt rides right on the plastic and i ALWAYS come home with bruises on my butt.

but i guess if your not putting your butt in your nerf nets it would be comfortable sitting on top of it.

I wouldn't go that far, as to say I think it's awesome. It's alright. It gets too narrow too fast in my opinion. My quadzilla seat kicks it's butt.............1987 technology baby, LOL.

I have another issue with the YFZ engine, I'd like to point out. The cam rides on journals in the head. There are NO bearings. It rides DIRECTLY on the aluminum of the head. This is a common problem area for the yfz. Probably the worst engineering of the whole bike, IMO. Can't believe I forgot to mention this earlier. Honda and KTM had that aspect firgured out alot better...........especially honda.

Well no responses for several days......did everyone go out and buy YFZ's and leave this forum? If so, you'll see what I was griping about on the seat. LOL

Yea no response on the web, they just go out and buy one after reading your thoughts. Crazy people! I still haven't read the whole thing cuz my phone hurts my eyes! Qzilla feel free to copy and paste your write up to a 1Gen YFZ review thread, or however you'd like to word it. I'll gladly do it once I'm back to a comp. Thanks for the added info to the site!

Actually I did buy one!  haha  Should pick it up this weekend.  It already has a Quad Tech hump seat though so I'm not going to get the full effect.

Fossil, have you owned the DS450? That's the only one I haven't had experience with, but very curious about of course!
