Hello fellas, I recently acquired a 2003 Predator on a sweet trade and have quite a few questions. First off:

Traded my 2002 Warrior for an 03 Troy Lee Predator. This trade only happened because the Preddy has the usual cam chain problems and the guy didnt want to deal with it anymore. I will upload some pictures soon. Apparently he raced it a few times. The only noticeable mods are aftermarket handlebars and a K&N filter. And some ridiculous 24" tires on it, he said for "trail riding".

Anyways, it was having fits when trying to start, I assumed corrosion, rust, bad battery, etc. so I took the battery off and all the wires and cleaned them off and brushed them down but like a noob I didnt pay attention to how they were connected to the magnetic switch. And now I cant even get the starter to click. I can hear a very faint sound clicking from the starter when I turn the key on but thats it. If anyone could shed some insight on this, it would be greatly appreciated! Maybe a pic or something. I looked up the wiring schematic but that looks like hieroglyphics to me. Ive never had battery issues so I have never dealt with this.

Second, he didnt specify on the cam chain but said I probably "shouldn't ride it". So I intend on ordering a chain in the next few days. What else would I need to get with the chain? Hopefully, the cam isn't beat up.

Lastly, The handlebars are solid as a rock on the mount but there is a solid half inch of "play" back and forth AND up and down. Is this normal? I have not inspected the steering assembly but a future diagnosis would help.

Thanks for taking the time to read this! I intend on actually keeping this quad and making some serious upgrades in the future and with the help of you guys it would definitely go by alot easier.

Welcome!

I'll start off with this:  how do you know it's cam chain problems?  What exactly did it NOT do before?  I say this because I trust nobody on craigslist as to what they say.  Many, many times when a machine "needs the carb cleaned" that's a sign there is much bigger problems.

As for the bars, it's most likely your upper bushing causing the fore/aft movement.  The vertical movement is probably a junk bearing on the bottom of the stem.

Also, check out this thread for some generic info:

i would stop trying to start it. download a service manual to try and help with the wiring or go to a parts schematic like rmatv and see the blow apart of the wiring.

now still stop trying to start it. if it has timing chain issues and the guy was willing to trade it for a machine of lesser power and handling instead of spending $60 and 30 minutes changing it out. he probably also never adjusted the valves. i would start by adjusting the valves. continuing to run it or trying to start it could bend a valve destry and destroy a piston if it has not already. after the valves and timing has been checked and if it will turn over freely without any bent valves i would order a timing chain and clutch cover gasket and change out the timing chain for good measure.

OK that helps a ton. Thanks for the links guys. I will shift my focus to the valves and cam. Battery wiring isnt a biggie. I'm also learning as I go so you guys don't be surprised if I make noob mistakes. I have a pretty decent general knowledge but the whole valve and cam deal is a whole other ballpark
