Hey, new guy here. Sorry if this has been covered, I searched and didn't find what I was looking for.
We just picked up a really clean low hours 2006 Outlaw 500 today. Christmas present for my 16yo son. All stock except for an obnoxiously loud DG slip on. I will be checking to see if has been jetted for this. I've never been a big fan of the DG exhaust products. Not sure why, maybe just my perception of them. Anyway, I would probably be ok w/ this one except for the decibel level. It is loud! Maybe a repacking will help. My question is what other systems or slip ons do you recommend. I'm ok with louder than stock, just not crazy loud.
Thanks.

hello and welcome to the site.

i would try repacking it for sure. i also do not care for the dg products at all. i liked the hmf and fmf on the outlaws the best. the hmf sport is pretty loud the hmf competition can be adjusted to keep it quieter. i only ran the hmf 4.1 but i do think there is also some quiet versions. i think it was called fmf q4 or something like that they may have only been for the ktm powered outlaw though. also the pure polaris duals were a quieter choice for the outlaw 500 harder to come by these days though.

Well first off welcome to the site and secondly what dg exhaust is it? If it is a race series then yes it will be very loud. I have a X2 series full system and it is pretty loud. I had an FMF Q4 on my 525 and it was just a little louder than stock

Nothing wrong with the DG for the 500. It flows as good as most after market for the 500. Packing is where I would start, also they had at one time quite inserts. There race can is way loud like 106 db and with a insert around 99db.  There standard cheap steel can should be around 89 to 92 db .

Ya, once I got it apart today there was no packing material at all except for about the last inch where the end cap attaches. This is the basic steel bodied can. It says it has a spark arrestor, but there's no sign of it. I'll repack it and replace the spark arrestor. I see the quiet inserts on ebay, might consider one.

Also disassembled the carb to inspect jetting. Appears to be stock. 145 main, 37.5 pilot. Looking at the plug it would appear to be running rich. I'm replacing the air filter with a UNI and installing a new plug. What would you recommend for jetting? I'm at about 1000 feet.

Thanks.

with the air box lid on i would start with a 155 main. clip in the 3rd notch down from the top or blunt end of the needle 45 pilot.

air box lid off a 165 to 170 main clip 4th notch on the needle ans a 47 to 50 pilot.

Thanks for the reply,
Got a chance to use the quad for the first time today. I repacked the silencer and added a screen type spark arrester. Also thoroughly cleaned the carb. Still on stock jetting. As expected its lean. I'm getting some popping on the top end. My question is, should I just order up a selection of mains and pilots from Jets R Us or spend the extra money on a complete kit? If a kit, who do you recommend?
