I have a guy that wants to trade his 2003 Predator for my crf450r dirt bike. 

Predator Mods -- 12.5:1 JE high compression pistion, Bigger shift forks, Nicholas Racing CDI rev box, fmf power core exhaust, k&n filter, 94L chain, Tag oversized handlebars, stainless steel clamp, grips, GPI hoses, and a few other misc. parts.

Bad: He says it has no front brakes, it sat for a while and he thinks the lines rotted and that it just needs a new master cylinder.

I know 2003 predators are know for transmission failures, and this guy said his 4th gear went out and he bought a new trans and added bigger shift fork rods so it would fix the problem. Is there anything i should look for while i'm taking a look at it? Anything else i should be aware with the early year predators?

that could be a good deal. if he has the trans fixed it may be good to go. a master cylinder and lines are not to terribly expensive on ebay.

run it ride it make sure it starts runs and does overheat. also check out all the bearings a arms bushings and tie rod ends.

What do you think about the mods? Would a high compression piston give good gains without throwing a bore kit in? Also, since it does already have the high compression piston, could i just buy the 560 bore kit without the piston?

HIGH COMP PISTON GIVES A GOOD LIL GRUNT FROM STOCK, NO YOU CANNOT USE THE SAME PISTON ON THE BBK THE BBK PISTON IS LARGER...

AS FOR MODS THERES MANY AND ALL ARE MAINLY GONNA BE WHAT YOU WANT AND LIKE...

figured i wouldn't be able to use the same piston. guess i'm going to have to keep my eyes open for someone selling their 558 kit.

Alright, so I need some opinions here. I have the choice of either trading my bike for the 2003 predator i listed above or selling it for $2500 and buying a 2006 predator tld i saw on Craig's. The guy with the 2006 tld is asking $2400 but i'm sure i can get him down to at least $2200. The tld is pretty stock with just nerfs and bumber. Just a note, the guy with the 2003 is including the stock piston (in good shape) and the whole old bottom end of the motor, the trans is gone but it'd be nice to have the extra parts like the starter and stuff. What do you guys think??

the 2003 looks nice and i would say do it if it was the only option but a 2006 would likely be a better deal if it is in as good or better condition, newer hopefully less wear less hours. the only thing that makes me nervous is the swapping of trans and bottom ends on the 2003. anytime someone has been in the engine it makes me wonder about how long it will last. if you get to ride them both and the 2003 is in great running and riding condition then pick the one you feel like is going to need less things replaced or worked on.

I would give up my left leg to have a Troy lee orange predator with reverse I getting to old to be yanking it around just to turn around

There isn't any difference in power between the years, is there? I heard somewhere the 03-04s had a bit more power. But i never read anything to conform this.

I rode a 2003 predator waaay back and i remember it being a lot less "tippy" than my friends 2005 (or 2006) TLD, is this because of the longer swing arm? What are the gearings on 2003s?

all the predators i owned were kinda high and twitchy until you get them lower and wider. the 2003 has 14 37 gearing and the 2005+ has 14 38 gearing. the 2003 has a swingarm that is about an inch longer. polaris says it is 5/8 of in inch longer the ones i measured were right at 1 inch different.

it looks kinda like stock height to me. the front shocks look stock to me. both are good machines. stock or modded both are good machines.

I would prefer the 2006 tld but i would have to wait on a buyer for my crf450 to get it. While the guy with 2003 would trade me straight up now. All im getting on CL are people low balling me. I'm going to arrange a meet with the 03 guy and just do what you mentioned Leo - give it a good test ride and see if everything is copacetic.

very cool. if the 06 is not a sure thing go for the 2003 as long as it runs and rides as good as it looks i think you will be happy the 2003 is a good machine and that one looks nice to me.
