i have an 08 irs with hmf slip on and 165 main jet... at idle if i push the throttle to fast it dies.. and when wot then let off completly and let it slow itself it will backfire.. sometimes it will die.. do i need to up the pilot and what other adjustments should i check

what notch is the clip on the needle set at, how many turns out is the a/f screw set at, what elevation are you jetting it at, which air filter do you have, do you have the air box lid on or off, and have you done the oring mod?

Start turning mixture screw out a 1/⁴ turn or so.
If u want that low end stumble gone, search Accelerator pump squirt timing!

only changes i have done to carb from stock is put the 165 main in and put the o ring on thing to pull it faster.. i have k n air cleaner with lid off..at 1000ft.. not sure what the other settings came like from factory

ok if you have aftermarket a pipe, filter and an open air box changing the main jet is not enough. you need to move the clip on the needle down a notch or 2 towards the pointy end of the needle and you need to adjust your fuel air screw out a 1 turn or so.

i will try these adjustments tonight.. can u give a little more detail as to what those adjustments actually do? moving the clip down allows it to draw more fuel? and the air screw turning out is more fuel less air? and is it just for idle or throughout the throttle range?

the lower you put the clip on the needle the higher it is raised out of the jet allowing more fuel to match the extra air you have pumping in and out of your engine through the free flowing exhaust and filter. the further out, counter clockwise you turn the fuel air screw the more fuel it allows to pass. the a/f screw is mostly for your idle to about 1/4 throttle, your needle is mostly from about 1/4 throttle to 3/4 throttle, your main jet is mostly from 3/4 throttle to full throttle but they all affect each other some and affect the flow of fuel and air from start up to full throttle. they also all need to transition smoothly together to have consistent throttle response and a properly fueled burn. here is a generic chart that gives you an idea of what affects what and how much.

whats a good starting point for a/f screw? any tips on how to adjust it while on bike? i cant reach in there with anyhting to adjust it, not enough room. im at 1500 ft stock jets 3rd clip on needle.

2.5 turns out is a good starting point.

I went 158 Main 3rd clip from tip and 2.5 A/F screw, pretty spot on too!
