Usually gas gets into the oil from a flooding condition.  Compression test and also check to make sure your float in the carb is set proper.

It sure sounds like a flooding condition.  Clean the carb, be sure the float is set correctly and inspect the float needle and seat for wear and replace if there is.
Also, sometimes if a carb has been setting for a long time, the o-rings can dry out and shrink or crack and cause problems.  On my scrambler and sportsman there is an o-ring underneath the float needle holder and they can leak if they crack or shrink and cause the carbs to flood.
