I recently purchased an 06 LTR450.

It is in great shape for the price. So i thought. She was making a terrible noise that I believed to be cam chain. After poping the millionth retainer clip, the fuel injection system on this bike is somewhat complicated. I was told by nick that the swirl filter(the on/off for the fuel) goes bad in these frequently. i have heard that people remove the guts and add an inline filter before the pump. A 35 micron filter is recommended. I still cant believe you need a screwdriver to turn the gas off... Speaking of gas, the gas light comes on intermittently even with a full tank and I cant seem to diag the problem with the wiring.

The cam chain has been replaced and the tensioner has been inspected. The spring was within spec, but I suspect that it is not putting enough tension on the chain. 

The valves were way out of spec. Intake had no clearance and required .012" of shim to get it in spec. exhaust was just within.

It has a yoshi full, full yoshi with  a PIM2 programmer and DATA autotune. I am unsure how to use this system and i can tell its running lean. It runs far better with something over the airbox. Anyone have experience with this system?

I am going to tear it down in the next week or so.

i sure hope that tensioner is just not functioning that is what it sounds like to me. otherwise that is a good looking machine.

For starters, check the primary nut and all the other nuts on the clutch side of the engine.

Did you ever find out what's up with the black frame?

I really hope so too leo.the frame was painted metallic black at some point. I do not believe it was totally stripped. I am under the impression that it was painted just to match the graphics kit. I don't see any repairs to the frame.

UPDATE:
Tried to start it the last week and it sounded like the starter was being heavily taxed. thought it was low voltage or a bad battery. hooked it up to the jumper and tried again. fried the starter.

pulled the clutch cover off. bone dry. did not know i needed to fill that too. bike was ran for 10 min and nothing was in there... cover was left off and no leakage. why does this not circulate? i am under the impression that they have you add 400ml so that it is not a dry start but have been told there are 3 oil pumps. all of which take part in circulating the oil through out the bike... [confused] 

filled the oil, replaced the starter and its still sounding taxed. wont start even with a jumper and pops every so often. im thinking decomp mech, jumped time or spun the cam.

the bike turns over fine by hand with no uncommon resistance. i did not take the entire right side cover yet. i will tonight. oh yea, the fuel light is on all the time, yet it has plenty of fuel. havent replaced the swirl but its on its way.

any ideas?

no idea on the 3 oil pumps business. like you i just assumed it was to not have any dry areas. there might be more to it than i thought. i will have to look into that. as far as the no start starter frying i am thinking you are right on with the decomp, or timing issue.

yeah it does i just went out and started it 5 or 6 times and it does kinda sound like an old yamaha virago starter on it's way out. it does turn over real easy though and fires so fast i had to kinda flood it to get it not to start so i could really hear it.

ok you are correct There are 3 pumps, 1 for the trany components 1 for the engine components and 1 to return oil to the oil tank. in the manual on page 6.25 it shows 3 pumps and what they do.

just seams odd that the entire thing sounds and looks dirty...

i was in the garage yesterday changing the oil on my truck. i was waiting for the oil to drain and i decided to try to start the ltr. my hand was resting on the frame near the intake and i could feel puffs of wind. i put my habd over the exhaust and sure enough there was suction. this bike ran after i timed it. starting to think it sheared the woodruff or the cams spun. this machine hates me

UPDATE: 
new starter and still sounds taxed. only getting 40 psi comp but its not turning over quickly.

i also ripped out the pim 2 and data mod. tried the bike with a cherry bomb and stock. got a couple pops on the cherry bomb but no start

checked the timing on 3 separate occasions and pulled the cams. decomp seems good. 

has hot blue spark and fuel pump is functioning. next step is to pull injector

bike ran poorly when i bought it and had gotten progressively harder to start. i do remember needing to give it some throttle to start it which i thought was a no-no on efi.

i hate this machine

Well that sucks. You're eliminating most everything without totally tearing it apart, but man, what a pain that thing has been. Hope you get it figured out.

should my compression be higher even though its not turning over fast? it doesn't turn over much faster with the plug in 200 amp jumper either. still got less than 50 psi. that thing can jump my truck with a completely dead battery too

I dunno ANYTHING about these quads, but is it possible theres a bad (or missing) ground wire somewhere?   Maybe you have a leaky injector... I have an old suzuki bike (gs1100e) that if I don't shut the fuel off the carbs will overflow and fill up the cylinders and it won't hardly turn over until it dries out or I pull a couple plugs to let the gas pump out.  Just some ideas.

no carbs on this bike. efi- aka Extremely F****** Irritating. had a pim2 and data box but i ripped them out and replaced with a cherry bomb.

NOTE- other forums blow. very few and far between you will find someone with their head not lodged in their a** or shouting out something that worked on their buddy's sister's boyfriend's dad's bike. i suppose i have been spoiled here.

so i figured out the slow turn over- we got hasty the last time and ripped the gasket and used ultra silver gasket maker. turns out, that the clearance is so small, that the case needs that 1/16" or the flywheel rubs on the cover.. smh. Also, i used a 9v battery to open the injector. sprayed and ran lots of air through it. Still wont start on its own.  Anyway, got at least one kink out of the chain. Dragged it the other day and got it started. ran ok but died at every turn. nice to hear it actually run. next order of business is to check the fuel regulator. it never smells like fuel and seams to be running hot, maybe a lean condition. the motor is still really noisy. hope i dont need any motor work. i am so used to working on my outlaw, that i dread the million screws and push pins on this bike.

Anyone got any ideas? i am tempted to check the valves again but i have checked them a few times and it is a 4 hr job

No I did not. I will try that next. I will probably take both the pump and the regulator apart. Pump is working. I can hear it and it squirts gas everywhere when I pull the hose off the reg
