Any feedback on the Raptor 660's?  Friend of mine is looking at an older one, but seems to be in really good condition.

i have rode a few and i did not like them at all. they feel top heavy and awkward. i did not care for the 700 any more. the 660's had there fair share of engine failures. if they have all new suspension, new a arms new steering and are lowered with a stroker engine they can be extremely fast and fun to ride. in stock or near stock form i would rather own a blaster. i used to have a blaster i liked better than most of the raptors i have come across.

if he can get it real cheap and likes it after test riding it next to your outlaw i say go for it. but if he does not like the way it feels i would pass by the time you fix and replace all that it needs you could have bought a really nice outlaw, predator, yfz, ltr, 450r, banshee, ect. in that order in fact. after about 10 more old school machines i would place a stock raptor in there about 16 or 17 from the top of machines i would like to own.

I know for sure to stay away from the first year machines as they had transmission problems (2001).  Other than that, I agree with Leo.  There's better machines out there.

I would never own one. Three of my friends owned them (against my suggestion) and all had problems. Even besides the problems, they are very poor handling and aren't any faster (stock) than the 450s out these days. I just REALLY don't like them, and I like nearly every bike! The 700's are quite an improvement, still, not my cup of tea. My buddy Crash owned one, then went to YFZ, now has an Outlaw 450.

What is he looking for, the baddest and fastest? Something simple and reliable? Something for woods, MX?

All woods riding these days.  Needs to be reliable as we ride in the middle of no where.

of course the outlaw is on top of my list. a predator, yfz and even a well built honda would go on the list for good pure sport woods machines. if he is looking for a fast good deal tell him to find a scrambler 400. i still love these machines as much as anything out there. i am not saying they are the fastest or even a true sport machine, but i think i have more fun on them than anything. the only time i need more power is at the sand dunes every where else i find myself hanging right with new 450's every where they like to go.

If he really doesn't want a Polaris, I would suggest a Honda, either 450R or 400EX. Great for first bikes. Simple and reliable, and great in the woods. There is better and faster, but wasn't he just looking at a 660R?

i agree the 400ex is a very fun light reliable machine. i built a 440ex pretty cheap that i liked a lot i was just too fat to keep it forever they are built for a 180 or under guy.

i built it for under $2,000 and it ran like a champ.

Carbs are a pain if you do any modds valves like to tighen up faster than other bike too hope this helps. I hade two and wouldnt waist my time or money but thats just me love yamahas but not raptors

Agree with all above, I put a clutch in my buddys a couple months ago, what a joke set up that was. It need garbage cleaned and started to look into that and that's as fas as that made it. Who ever designed that set up should be kicks eight square in the nuts, when I finaly dis ride it I about crashed it, drove it back to my shop and park it. I like every thing with wheels but this is way way down on the list.

So you guys are serious when you say a Blaster is a better bike LOL.  I kinda want to ride one now just so I can see what it is like for myself.

Appreciate the input.

the blaster may not be a better machine but i had a lot more fun on my 240 blaster than i did a stock 660 raptor, most guys get mad, but i did not like the 700 any better. like i say if you are committed to one and you build a good solid stroked raptor in a straight line few machines will keep up with you. i have raced a few stroked raptors and they just blew everything away but we are talking serious $20,000 show rigs. anything close to stock just feels like riding on top of a shopping cart.

Where we ride you don't put that kinda money in your quad...Most of the guys where I ride that show up with showroom bikes will not even ride them because they are afraid of beating them up.  We have trees that jump out in front of you, deep muddy ruts, huge rocks and water crossings everywhere.  And that's just to get to the trails

I owned a raptor 660 before i started owning 450 race quads and I SINGLE HANDEDLY flipped that damn thing enough times that if they were on film you could watch just the crash videos for a week straight and still have more footage to go.

Super top heavy, and if you take it to a track you *Will* be made fun of / Die. Its kind of an unspoken rule that if you own a raptor, youre a douche bag who just wanted "the fastest quad" to brag about.

But if youre a Duner......well thats a different story, and thats where they shine.

PS: i know this is all for your buddy, not you

ha ha...I would never own a Raptor, well I can't say that...I would buy any bike if the price is right and I could make money off it if I didn't like it.

I like Yamaha in general but honestly don't know much about any bike other than the few I have owned.

BTW, I am keeping the Outlaw.  I might buy a straight axel sport quad sometime but I am not in a hurry.  Besides the Outlaw is my own personal money pit, I cant stop buying parts for it. The latest being a Precision Stabilizer.  I cant wait to try it out!

i concur with all of the above. my brother and father both bought 2001s the first year they came out. honestly i was very impressed with the torque, but had trouble riding them. my father sold his within a year and bought another quadracer and my brother bought another blaster. they never had an issue, but they barely rode them. ive riden them since i've put on a few pounds and i'll tell you, i could never ride one. way too tall. feels like you mounted a bar stool to the seat of a quad

From what you said, it seems like your buddy is looking for a reliable sport quad for the woods.  Look no further than the kicker model Honda 450s.  Tons of power for the woods and the kicker makes it about as reliable as you can get!  You can get a 2007 for $2500 nowadays.

I forgot my buddy had one. He got it used. Put a yosh pipe, k&n, n jet. He's a big guy and rides hard. After a good season the cam chain stretched and the piston slammed the valves and there went that top end.
