Looking for advice on buying one. I see a lot of 06-08's for sale in the area. They range from $1500-$2500. I had a 09 KFX 450, but it sucked in the woods. It bounced me all over the place. I have a new Can Am Renegade 850 XXC. I rode my sons Honda TRX 250 and I miss the lighter bike. I didn't know about the Outlaw 525 IRS. I want one now in theory, but will it be all that I want? I am looking for the light race quad feel with the smooth suspension of the Renegade.

Plus one guy on CL just told me he had issues with the crank shaft going, transmission fork issues, and oil pump issues.

I think the 525 IRS is an incredibly great mixture of lightweight sport quad with plush Big Comfy quad suspension. I have owned two of them in the past and I just bought a third one. they seem to come up for fairly decent prices and I'm getting used to working on them at this point. I have had four different 525 engines in quads and 1 in a dirt bike and I only had one engine failure and it was an engine that had been raced thoroughly with a lot of hours all the rest of them have held up very well with regular oil changes

So how often do you change the oil? Every ride? Every 10 hours?
Any info and advice is appreciated.

The Can Am is like a car and is very low maintenance, so I am not sure what to expect

Yep you need to change the oil every 10 to 15 hours I find it's after every second or third good long ride. It holds about 2 quarts.

So what kind of prices are people paying for these? What should I look for when I go test ride them?

I just paid $1,600 for one it needed an inner drive shaft boot and new Plastics and tires so I think you are right on in the $1,500 $2,500 price range. the only reason why I bought this one was it had very low hours and it runs perfectly and I know it has been well maintained because he is paid me to maintain it since he has owned it. honestly I would look at everything wiggle the front end wiggle the back end lift it off the ground wiggle the tires the arms the shafts anything that is loose and has lots of play will need maintaining if not replacing most of all make sure it runs top notch and listen for any extra rock crushing noises from these noisy engines it'll make lots of noise in neutral with clutch out when you pull the clutch in most of the Rock crushing noise should go away. Also if you get real serious about any particular machine bring cash and tell the owner if you can do an oil change with them then you'll consider buying it. you can even buy the oil at the very least they get an oil change at best you get a good machine and a little help on your first oil change. drop the oil and look for metal shavings. A few tiny pieces on the magnetic drain plug would not be a big deal but lots of bright shiny aluminum or bearing material would not be good.

You are welcome. And last but not least if you get there and the oil just looks like black sludge I recommend turning around and just leaving usually they don't care about the machine at all if they didn't care to have fresh oil in it when they're trying to sell it. If it does have nice fresh oil in it make sure you are running it a good amount of time before you drop the oil to look for shavings. In the real world not all of this is always possible I live out in the country and most people that buy from live in the sticks also so dropping oil and running the machine up and down the road and in their yard is not that big a deal. I understand living in town that does not always work out.

Where are you located? I have a 2008 525 IRS that I want to sell as I want to get into a dirt bike instead. Was thinking about listing mine on Craigslist soon for $1800-$2000. There is currently nothing wrong with it. I recently replaced both front wheel bearings. I am located in Southern Wisconsin. If interested, I can give you a run down of anything I have done with it and accessories it has on it.

I would pay that in cash, but I am in CT. I am willing to travel, but that is way too far.
I checked Madison WI and it's 15 hours from me.

Thanks for the offer.

What do you think about this one?

2007 Polaris outlaw 525 IRS, new head, rocker, auto decompression, top end gaskets, timing cover, chain, sprocket, case saver. Newer rear carrier, valves just adjusted. Tag X5 bars, Nerf bars, elka rear suspension, BG exhaust tip. Need cv boot. Maybe 5 hours on the rebuild. Don't have time to ride it anymore. $2900.

He said he would take $2300. The auto decompression broke and cracked the head so hence the top end rebuild.
I can go see it tomorrow

So that head issue doesn't raise any red flags for you?

I ended up buying a 2007 525 IRS for $1900. I didn't want to pay that much, but I had driven 2.5 hours to get there and he wouldn't go lower.
It needs stuff, but the motor and clutch seemed great.
Needs plastics, bushings, etc... Even if I bought one in better shape it still would need the consumables.

I am waiting on parts now. Yay...
