I did NOT like the TRX kicker (R) at first. Compared to the LTR it didn't handle well, lack of power and just felt inferior. Not a very fair comparison as the Honda cost me $1,700 with title and running. Started modded and ended up loving the machine. It wasn't 'everything' I wanted, but was a great bike, handled well when set up, cheap to mod and super reliable having nearly no electronics. Swamped it several times accidentally and after flushing the motor it was good every time. Here are my impressions:

Stock:
-Handling sucks, front is 44.5" wide and likes to bicycle
-Motor is LOUDER than an RFS, though it was going to blow up at first
-Power was less than my modded Z400s
-Super easy to work on, nearly no electronics, easy to reach everything
-Front shocks almost knocked my teeth out, very harsh and stiff for lightweight
-Headlight was sort of a joke, a flashlight would be better

After Mods:
-Power was great for the woods, but no RFS killer
-Handle was very nice, planted, very light and easy to zip through the woods
-Aftermarket exhaust drowned out engine noise!
-Headlight became useable
-Set it up how I wanted, including rebuilds for JUST OVER $1,000, almost impossible with other bikes
-Still as easy to work on and simple as ever

After having the shocks rebuilt/resprung, GTThunder XC rear linkage and new tread, the bike handled the woods great and the front was widened to 45.5" and center of gravity lowered. Threw on a full CHM exhaust to add some power along with drown out the engine noise. Removed the lid and put in a Pro Design w/K&N. Also added a HC2. Bike had a little power now, enough for the woods, but wasn't easy to lug, so I also dropped a tooth on the front sprocket. All that was pretty much NEEDED for me to really like the bike, BUT it, along with the rest of the mods, were done for $1,100 or less! That's right, one cheap bike to build! I had $2,800 into said and done, sold it for $3,400 later on. If I wanted another back up bike, a TRX would be a great option; cheap and reliable!

Any questions, ask. Any other TRX owners that want to input, do so!

Edited. To sum it up, I didn't care for the bike stock, but it was an awesome machine to build on the cheap, and very reliable. Certainly not the most advanced or fastest, but lots of support and potential.

Nice review.  Similar to what I've heard before...cheap, cheap, cheap to mod.

I built a big bore stroker 510 04-05 Honda for a buddy of mine. That engine has a LOT of potential. I agree that the bike was a turd in stock form, but it straight up woke up with a few mods. It's one of the fastest pump gas bikes I've ever seen now. It's no wonder the aftermarket community jumped on it for accessories. And no wonder it's usually the fastest 450 class bike at most FSA drag events.

I agree, they have virtually unlimited potential. I've seen MANY fast Hondas, but never went that route with mine.
