I know this is not a TrailBoss section but I figured it was worth a try since there is nowhere else it seemed to fit.

I have an 03 TrailBoss and it starts real quick but has to be partially choked for about 5-10 minutes for it to run normal.  It I take it off choke it will pop and chug (backfire) when I try to give it gas.  If I pull the choke slightly it cleans up.  It sounds like a lean condition because the choke clears it up.  Once it has run for 5-10 minutes it is fine without choke at all.

Any ideas?

Thanks

sounds to me like it is cold blooded and like to be fully warmed up to run right. may be a sign it is a little lean. is this a 2 stroke 250 or one of the 4 stroke 330 ect?

Thanks for the new section....It is my wife's ride.

It is 4 stroke 330.  I too was thinking lean but that is only because I try to relate it to a 2 stroke snowmobile.  I am OK with it coughing and chugging but it's hard to train the wife to know what she is hearing and feeling and how to manage it.  I was just wondering if there was something wrong.  I am well versed in the 2 stroke sleds but the 4 stroke is new to me.

Thanks Leo!

ok i would check the valve clearances. The Valve Lash for a Polaris Magnum 330 or a Trail Boss 330 is .006 on the Intake & .006 on the Exhaust.

that could be the reason if they are tight when cold then when it warms up everything loosens up some. if they are left tight too long the cams can get ruined. i had one sportsman 500 that had no cam lobes left on it when i bought it. the guy put 8,000 miles on it and never adjusted the valves.

i would start there.

I just looked into the valves when I bought it this spring.  The intake side was extremely tight and I had to back it off.  I will have to check it out again.

Thanks

I had this same problem with my 98 trailboss 250. I found out that it was just the carburetor getting to much gas.

I would bet that your pilot jet is plugged, that can be the problem when they need the choke out to run right.
